INEC Schedules 2027 Elections Amid Ramadan Concerns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the schedule for Nigeria's 2027 general elections, with presidential and national assembly elections set for February 20, 2027, and governorship and state assembly elections on March 6, 2027. Party primaries are scheduled between May 22 and June 20, 2026.

Concerns have emerged regarding the election dates coinciding with the holy month of Ramadan, which runs from February 7 to March 8, 2027. Former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, representing the People's Democratic Party, has urged INEC to reconsider the election date due to potential impacts on voter turnout and logistical challenges during Ramadan.

His aide, Bashir Ahmad, echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for inclusivity in the electoral process. INEC Chairman Moham Haruna assured the public that the commission is sensitive to these concerns and is committed to conducting transparent and credible elections while adhering to constitutional timelines and regulatory guidelines.
