National Assembly to Discuss 2027 Election Date Concerns

The Nigerian National Assembly is set to reconvene on Tuesday to address the 2027 election timetable, which has sparked significant concern due to its scheduling during the holy month of Ramadan. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that the presidential election will take place on February 20, 2027, with governorship and state assembly polls scheduled for March 6, 2027.

Stakeholders, including former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and his aide Bashir Ahmad, have urged INEC to reconsider this date, suggesting it falls within a period of spiritual devotion for millions of Nigerian Muslims. Various political parties, including the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Action Democratic Party (ADP), have echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for broader participation in the electoral process.

Sheikh Abdurrahman Ahmad and Nojeem Jimoh also called for adjustments to the timetable to ensure inclusivity and respect for religious obligations, highlighting past instances where election dates were modified to accommodate significant religious observances.
