Makinde and Mohammed Plan to Leave PDP for ADC

Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State are reportedly set to leave the People's Democratic Party (PDP) as of April 2023. This decision comes during a tumultuous period for the PDP, which has seen a significant number of defections, with no fewer than nine governors, 19 senators, and 47 members of the House of Representatives having already left the party.

Sources familiar with the developments indicate that both governors are planning to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Their decision to defect is influenced by ongoing leadership tussles within the PDP, which have created an irreconcilable crisis.

The political landscape is preparing for the upcoming presidential and national assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027, and the governorship and state house assembly elections set for February 6, 2027. The PDP is expected to conduct its primary elections between April 23 and May 30, 2026, with membership registration deadlines set for April 1 and April 21, 2026.
