Anambra State Suspends Traditional Elections Ahead of 2027

The Anambra State government has announced the suspension of all Traditional Rulership and Town Union government elections in light of the upcoming 2027 general elections. This decision was communicated in a statement signed by Tony Onyekomelu, Head of Department for Town Union Matters, on behalf of the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The suspension is due to the political campaigns and general elections scheduled for January and February 2027. Communities with elections set for December and February are instructed to conduct them by November 2026, while those planned for January and February 2027 should be rescheduled for Easter 2027.
Onyekomelu urged all affected communities to comply with this directive. Additionally, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, the State Director of DSS, the Special Adviser to Governor Charles Soludo on Community Security, and all Local Government Area Chairmen have been notified of this suspension.
