INEC Seeks Police Support for 2027 General Elections

On May 6, 2026, Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), met with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu to discuss the security needs for the upcoming 2027 general elections, scheduled for January 16 and February 6, 2027.

Prof. Amupitan congratulated IGP Disu on his recent appointment and expressed confidence in his leadership to enhance security efforts.

He highlighted the critical role of security in ensuring a successful electoral process and identified issues such as electoral malpractice, vote trading, and violence as threats to public confidence and national security. Prof.

Amupitan called for proactive security measures, including comprehensive risk assessments and strategies to address potential flashpoints. IGP Disu assured that the Nigeria Police Force is prepared to provide a secure environment for the elections, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the police and INEC.
