INEC Chairman Warns of Insecurity Threat to 2027 Elections

Professor Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), expressed concerns regarding the severe insecurity in various parts of Nigeria, which he identified as a potential threat to the conduct of free and fair elections in 2027. During a courtesy visit to IGP Olatunji Disu, Amupitan sought collaboration with the Nigeria Police to ensure a secure environment for the upcoming elections.

He emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough security risk analysis and proactive measures to identify potential flashpoints and mitigate risks. The 2027 general elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, for presidential and national assembly polls, and February 6, 2027, for governorship and state house assembly elections.

IGP Disu assured that the Nigeria Police is ready to provide security and warned against any preferential treatment for political parties, stressing the need for a unified approach to protect electoral personnel and materials.
