INEC Implements AI for Election Result Management

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is deploying artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the management of election results ahead of the 2027 general election. This initiative was announced during the launch of the AI for Elections Programme and Hackathon organized by Rise Networks in Abuja.
Lawrence Bayode, INEC’s Director of Information and Communication Technology, explained that the AI system will verify that electronically entered figures match those on paper result sheets and scanned copies before results can be transmitted. Any discrepancies must be resolved prior to uploading results.
Bayode emphasized that this technology aims to reduce human errors, enhance operational efficiency, and ensure that results published on INEC’s portal align with those recorded at polling units. However, he cautioned that advancements in technology should not compromise electoral security, operational stability, or public trust, urging developers to utilize publicly available or authorized data responsibly.
