Jega Calls for Urgent Amendments to Electoral Act Ahead of 2027

Prof. Attahiru Jega, a political science professor and former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has advocated for amendments to the 2026 Electoral Act to enhance the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process.

Speaking at a presentation in Abuja, he highlighted critical provisions needing immediate review, including Section 60(3), which pertains to electronic transmission of election results, and Section 83(5), which restricts courts from entertaining suits related to internal affairs of political parties. Jega expressed concerns that vague provisions could facilitate electoral malpractice, especially in a politically desperate environment.

He emphasized the need for a reliable framework for electronic transmission and warned against over-reliance on data from the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IREV). Jega also questioned the constitutionality of excluding qualification grounds for post-election matters, citing Section 131 of the 1999 Constitution.

He urged for urgent amendments within six months before the upcoming elections scheduled for January 16 and February 6, 2027, respectively.
