Akpabio Proposes Revisions to Electoral Act 2026

Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, disclosed on Tuesday during the opening of the National Assembly's third year legislative scorecard that there may be a revisit of the Electoral Act 2026. This consideration arises from concerns that certain provisions of the Act unintentionally disadvantage lawmakers seeking re-election, particularly following complaints from several federal lawmakers who lost party tickets during recent primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akpabio admitted that the provisions of the Electoral Act have produced unintended consequences, leaving legislators vulnerable during party primaries. He assured that the National Assembly would reflect on the legislation to ensure future laws do not place lawmakers at a disadvantage.

Additionally, earlier, Tajudeen Abba, Speaker of the House of Representatives, revealed that the House received 2,747 bills in the last three years, the highest since the return to democracy in 1999, with 363 bills passed and 72 receiving presidential assent.
