Kwara, Cross River States Require Resignation for 2027 Elections

In a significant political move, Kwara State has mandated that civil servants intending to contest in the 2027 general elections must resign from their positions. This directive was communicated through a circular dated March 13, 2026, signed by Dr.

Okedar Adeyinka on behalf of the Kwara State Head of Service. Similarly, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State issued a directive requiring members of the State Executive Council and political appointees to resign if they intend to run for office in the upcoming elections, with a compliance deadline set for March 26, 2026.

The letters emphasize adherence to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Public Service Rules. Both governors highlighted the importance of maintaining focus on governance and avoiding distractions from early political activities.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revised the timetable for the elections, with party primaries scheduled from April 23 to May 30, 2026, leading up to the presidential election on January 16, 2027, and governorship elections on February 6, 2027.
