Peter Obi Promises Jail for Election Rigging Offenders

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), declared during an interview with ARISE NEWS on September 24, 2026, that anyone found guilty of rigging elections under his administration would face imprisonment, regardless of the number of votes involved. He emphasized his commitment to electoral integrity and promised that opposition parties would not be harassed, stating they would be consulted on significant national decisions.

Obi also vowed to remain accessible to Nigerians and spend most of his time in the country if elected. He criticized restrictions on his campaign activities in some states and recounted his experiences as Anambra State governor, where he allowed political opponents to campaign freely.

Additionally, Obi addressed the controversy regarding Anambra State's debt profile during his tenure, asserting that he did not borrow money or issue bonds on behalf of the state and that it did not owe salaries or pensions when he left office in March 2014.
