EU Supports IDP Voting Inclusion for 2027 Elections

The European Union has endorsed initiatives to facilitate the participation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nigeria's electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections. This support was evident during a two-day stakeholder engagement organized by TAF Africa in Abuja on August 25 and 26.

The meeting involved officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), State Emergency Management Agencies, civil society organizations, and leaders from internally displaced communities. The focus was on implementing INEC’s framework for voting by IDPs and addressing barriers that hinder their voting rights.

Jennifer Dafwat, Senior Communications Officer at TAF Africa, emphasized the need for inclusive solutions. Challenges faced by IDPs include difficulties in accessing voter registration and traveling to polling locations.

John Gwamma, an IDP camp chairman in Borno State, raised concerns about security risks for displaced persons traveling to vote, while Yagana Abadam, acting Director-General of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, urged INEC to allow voting from current locations.
