Stakeholders Advocate for IDP Voting Rights in 2027 Elections

Stakeholders in Nigeria's electoral system have called for enhanced collaboration to ensure that Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) can exercise their constitutional right to vote in the 2027 general election. This call was made during a stakeholders’ engagement organized by TAF Africa, focusing on the implementation of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) framework for IDP electoral participation.

Ambassador Jake Epelle, Founder and CEO of TAF Africa, stated that displacement should not strip citizens of their political voice. Mrs. Dorothy Bello, representing INEC, reaffirmed the commission's commitment to an inclusive electoral process, emphasizing that the right to vote is fundamental and should not be compromised by displacement or conflict.

The stakeholders agreed on the importance of reliable information, sustained voter education, and effective coordination to facilitate IDP participation. They stressed the need for practical arrangements to ease voter registration, polling unit transfers, PVC acquisition, and safe voting for eligible displaced persons, viewing the INEC framework as a vital opportunity to strengthen Nigeria's democracy.
