INEC to Allow Voting for Plateau IDPs in 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that internally displaced persons (IDPs) in nine local government areas of Plateau State will be permitted to vote in the upcoming 2027 general elections. This announcement was made by Plateau State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Oliver Agundu during a stakeholders’ meeting in Jos.

INEC is currently making arrangements to set up designated voting centers in areas where these displaced residents are currently located. The affected local government areas include Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, Jos East, Jos North, Jos South, Mangu, Riyom, and Wase.

Agundu emphasized that displacement should not hinder any eligible Nigerian from exercising their right to vote, stating, “No eligible voter should be denied the opportunity to exercise his or her civic responsibility because of displacement.” He also encouraged IDPs to safeguard their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate in voter registration and updates whenever INEC opens the process, highlighting the commission's commitment to making the 2027 elections more inclusive.
