Minister Idris Advocates Responsible Broadcasting Ahead of 2027 Elections

Mohammed Idris, serving as the Minister of Information and National Orientation, called for responsible broadcasting to protect democracy as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections. He made this appeal during a speech delivered on his behalf by Jibrin Baba Ndace, the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), at the 3rd Annual National Conference of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB) in Bauchi.

Idris stressed the need for broadcasters to ensure that information is accurate, verified, and contextualized, warning against the spread of false information, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence and social media. He stated that responsible broadcasting should not equate to favorable reporting and urged media professionals to hold government and political entities accountable.

Idris also highlighted the importance of avoiding hate speech and provocation during the electoral period and mentioned federal investments in the broadcasting sector, including the Digital Switch Over platform and modernization efforts for NTA, FRCN, and VON.
