Minister Idris Urges Religious Leaders to Promote Peace

On [date not specified], Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, called on religious leaders to leverage their influence to foster peace and national unity in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. Speaking at the grand finale of the 2026 Synod of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and the International Communion of Charismatic Archbishops, Bishops and Apostles (ICCABA) at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, Idris warned that inflammatory messages could deepen religious and ethnic tensions.

He highlighted the significant responsibility of religious leaders, as millions of Nigerians look to them for guidance on both spiritual and societal issues. Idris cautioned against framing Nigeria's security challenges as religious conflicts, noting that attacks have affected individuals from various backgrounds.

He reiterated the government's commitment to protecting religious freedoms and urged churches to contribute to national development through education and humanitarian services. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, commended the Church for its contributions to peace and national cohesion.
