Call for Women's Empowerment Ahead of 2027 Elections

On Tuesday in Abuja, representatives from the Coalition of Catholic Reverend Sisters and various Civil Society Organizations, including the Africa Faith Justice Network and Dominican Justice and Peace, called for urgent reforms to enhance women's empowerment and ensure inclusive governance in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections. Eucharia Maduek, speaking on behalf of the coalition, highlighted the need for political parties to adopt structured and enforceable policies that empower women and strengthen democratic governance. Despite women comprising nearly half of Nigeria's population, they are grossly underrepresented in government at all levels, with only 4% participation, ranking Nigeria 178th out of 182 countries studied.

Maduek pointed out that countries like Rwanda and Cuba have significantly higher female political representation. She stressed the importance of comprehensive legislation to transform the political environment and ensure women's participation, urging Nigeria's political leadership to move beyond rhetoric to implement meaningful actions for long-term success.
