Concerns Rise Over Nigeria's Democratic Space Ahead of 2027

During a forum held in Kaduna, civil society organizations raised alarms about the diminishing democratic space in Nigeria as the 2027 general elections approach. Timothy Lawrence, the program manager at Legasi, highlighted recent political developments, particularly the trend of politicians defecting, including sitting governors, which he believes creates an imbalance in the political landscape.

This situation, he argues, is detrimental to a healthy democracy and raises concerns about the electoral process, including discussions around electoral reform and public trust in institutions. Lawrence stressed the importance of proactively engaging young people to channel grievances constructively rather than violently during elections.

The forum, which convened peacebuilding practitioners, also called for greater transparency and independence from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to rebuild public confidence. Additionally, Aminu Danja from Ahmadu Bello University urged civil society organizations to intensify voter education and engagement to combat voter apathy and called for security agencies to adopt proactive measures to curb electoral violence.
