Sultan and CAN President Call for Peace Ahead of 2027 Elections

At the 2026 Second Council Meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja, co-chairmen Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, and Archbishop Daniel Okoh, president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), called on religious leaders to exercise restraint in their statements and prayers as the 2027 general elections approach. They warned against using religious platforms to incite political tensions.

The Sultan emphasized the importance of praying for national leaders rather than condemning them, stating that religious leaders should refrain from making inflammatory comments during the electioneering period. He also urged them to avoid turning religious gatherings into political platforms and to support the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in prosecuting corruption without bias towards religious status.

Archbishop Okoh echoed the need for religious institutions to promote peace, reconciliation, and national unity amidst Nigeria's challenges.
