Northern CAN Urges Peaceful Elections Ahead of 2027

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) representing 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has issued a warning to political parties and candidates regarding the upcoming 2027 general elections. In a statement signed by its chairman, Rev. Dr Yakubu Pam, the association cautioned against transforming the elections into a battleground of religious, ethnic, and regional divisions.

CAN emphasized that Nigerians are already facing significant challenges such as insecurity, poverty, and unemployment, and urged politicians not to exacerbate these issues in their quest for power. The association specifically stated that Christianity and Islam should not be exploited for electoral gain and called for political and religious leaders to foster peaceful coexistence.

Highlighting insecurity as a primary concern, CAN pointed to terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence affecting northern communities, which have led to displacement and disrupted education. The association urged government authorities to deliver tangible security improvements and enhance resources for security personnel.
