Ministers Defy Resignation Order Ahead of 2027 Elections

In preparation for the 2027 general elections, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu issued a directive requiring political appointees to resign by March 31, 2026, if they intended to contest elections. Four ministers complied, including Yusuf Tanko Sununu (Minister of Humanitarian Affairs) and Nkeiruka Onyejeocha (Minister of State for Labour).

However, several key ministers, such as Adebayo Adelabu (Minister of Power) and Bosun Tijani (Minister of Communications), did not resign by the deadline, citing uncertainty over their chances in the upcoming elections. The ministers linked to various gubernatorial races, including those in Bauchi, Kebbi, and Ogun states, are reportedly awaiting assurances of consensus candidates from their party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This situation has created a climate of uncertainty regarding nominations and candidacies, as the deadline for compliance with the electoral act looms, and the president's support does not guarantee automatic tickets for the aspirants.
