Nigerian Man Sentenced to Life for Leicester Murder

Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, a 24-year-old Nigerian man, was sentenced to life imprisonment by Leicester Crown Court following his conviction for the murder of 56-year-old Nila Patel. The violent attack occurred on June 24, 2025, when Ahanonu, under the influence of cannabis, crashed his vehicle into Patel as she was walking home.

Witnesses reported Ahanonu driving dangerously, swerving across lanes and running red lights before veering towards pedestrians. After the crash, he fled the scene and assaulted Patel, who sustained severe injuries, including a fractured skull and brain trauma, leading to her death two days later.

Ahanonu was arrested on June 26, 2025, and during the investigation, police discovered cannabis and other items in his vehicle. Emma Matt, the senior investigating officer, described the incident as a horrific and random attack on an unknown victim.

Ahanonu had previously pleaded guilty to multiple offenses, including dangerous driving and assaulting emergency workers.
