Nigerian Jailed for Life in UK for Murder of Woman

Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, a 24-year-old Nigerian, was sentenced to life imprisonment by Leicester Crown Court for the murder of 56-year-old Nila Patel. The incident occurred on June 24, 2025, when Ahanonu, under the influence of cannabis, drove dangerously around Leicester city center, swerving across lanes and running red lights.

He crashed his vehicle and fled the scene, subsequently attacking Patel as she was walking home. Patel sustained severe injuries, including a fractured skull and brain trauma, and died two days later.

Ahanonu was arrested after police found him in possession of cannabis and three iPhones. He had previously pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

Following Patel's death, he was re-arrested on suspicion of murder. Inspector Emma Matt described the attack as a horrific and violent random act against an innocent woman.

The swift actions of the public in restraining Ahanonu were commended as crucial for justice.
