Nigerians Detained in Mozambique Amid Deportation Concerns

On March 27, 2026, thirteen Nigerians were deported from Mozambique, while 29 others remain in detention in Maputo without formal charges filed against them. The Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), represented by Director of Media and Public Relations Abdur Rahman Balogun, expressed concern over the treatment of Nigerians, describing it as unjust.

The deported individuals reportedly possessed valid residency permits, except for one whose visa had expired. NIDCOM's Chairman/CEO Abike Dabiri-Erewa criticized the handling of the case and called for the Nigerian government to intervene diplomatically with Mozambique to ensure justice.

The detained Nigerians were arrested at various business premises in Maputo despite having valid documents. NIDCOM has received expressions of sympathy regarding the ordeal and reassured support for seeking justice.

The commission emphasized the importance of Nigerians abroad respecting local laws while advocating for those wrongfully detained.
