Nigerian Universities Break into THE World Rankings 2027

In the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, three Nigerian universities—University of Ibadan (UI), University of Lagos (UNILAG), and Covenant University—achieved placements in the 801–1000 band. This marks the first time all three institutions have been ranked together in this tier.
The ranking reflects an improvement from the 2026 edition, where only UI and UNILAG were included, while Covenant University had dropped to the 1001–1200 band. The 2027 rankings assessed 2,297 universities from 118 countries, utilizing 17 performance indicators across five areas.
Nigeria's overall representation in the rankings increased, with 29 universities assessed, up from 24 in 2026. Five institutions made their debut in the rankings: Osun State University, University of Maiduguri, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Kwara State University, and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
The University of Oxford maintained the top position globally for the 11th consecutive year.
