Northern DisCos Owe N24.16 Billion in Unpaid Invoices

According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), three northern electricity distribution companies, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO), and Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED), were responsible for N24.16 billion, or approximately 97 percent, of the N24.94 billion in unpaid electricity market invoices during the second quarter of 2026. These companies accounted for about 15 percent of the N410.38 billion invoiced by the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) and the Market Operator (MO).
They also left N54.37 billion in customer bills uncollected and had around 1.35 million customers without meters. The figures reflect performance before NERC's intervention in KAEDCO's management, which included dissolving its board in August 2026 and appointing an interim board led by Dr Abdullahi Garba.
KAEDCO's cumulative market obligations since privatization reached approximately N456.5 billion as of May 2026.
