Benin, Togo, Niger owe Nigeria $10.17 million in power bills

According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), electricity customers in Benin, Togo, and Niger left $10.17 million unpaid on power invoices issued by Nigeria’s Market Operator (MO) for the second quarter of 2026. The three countries were invoiced a total of $18.84 million for electricity services but only remitted $8.67 million, resulting in a remittance performance of 46.02%.
Despite the outstanding amount, these international customers also made payments towards previous invoices from the first quarter. The Q2 figures indicate that current-quarter invoices were settled at less than half of their billed value.
Additionally, domestic bilateral customers showed significantly higher remittance performance during the same period. NERC reported that Ajaokuta Steel Co.
Ltd and the host community made no payments towards N1.18 billion in NBET invoices and N171.04 million owed to the Market Operator during the quarter, highlighting ongoing payment challenges.
