UI Medical Student Dies After Ingesting Insecticide

A 300-level medical student at the University of Ibadan, whose name has been withheld, died after ingesting insecticide identified as Sniper on Sunday night. Fellow students found the victim on the ground floor of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall with foam at the mouth.

The student was reportedly admitted after ingesting the insecticide and lost consciousness. Immediate assistance was provided by the student's roommate, who alerted hall authorities, leading to a transfer to Jaja Clinic for stabilization before being moved to the emergency unit at UCH, where the student was placed on life support.

Funmi Adetuyibi, the public relations officer of UCH, confirmed the student's death. The victim's parents reside in Akure, Ondo State.

The incident has prompted discussions about mental health, with advocacy groups condemning the rise in suicide themes in social media content, emphasizing the need for sensitivity towards individuals experiencing emotional distress.
