Student Dies During Football Training at Covenant University

On April 6, 2026, Toluwa Jesutunmi, a 500-level student at Covenant University in Ogun State, collapsed during a football training session. After complaining of leg pain and fatigue, he gasped for breath, prompting teammates to rush him to the university's medical center located opposite the playing field.

Despite the swift response, he was pronounced dead upon arrival, with medical personnel commencing cardiopulmonary resuscitation and using an automated external defibrillator, which proved unsuccessful. Professor Timothy Anak, the Vice Chancellor, noted that Jesutunmi had a prior undisclosed heart condition.

Following the incident, there were allegations regarding the lack of immediate oxygen support, but the Vice Chancellor clarified that there was no negligence on the part of the medical personnel, asserting that all necessary equipment was available. The university expressed condolences to the bereaved family, highlighting the significant loss to the university community.
