UK Funeral Director Faces Jail Over Body Scandal

Robert Bush, a 48-year-old funeral director who ran Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, England, is facing a five-day sentencing hearing after pleading guilty to 67 offences spanning 12 years. Prosecutor Chris Paxton revealed that police discovered 31 bodies in a cold storage area that should have been cremated months earlier, including a stillborn baby that had been there for almost two years.

Additionally, over 100 sets of ashes were found, with many bodies uncovered and in various states of decomposition. Jasmine Beverley, whose stillborn son Sunny was believed to have been cremated in May 2022, expressed shock upon discovering his remains in a brown envelope on the floor.

The investigation began in March 2024 after concerns were raised about the treatment of the deceased at Bush's funeral parlour. Bush's actions have sparked a campaign for improved regulation of the funeral industry, as he mistreated bereaved families on an "almost industrial scale.".
