Abdulsalami Abubakar Urges INEC to Ensure Fair Elections

On Friday, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain impartiality and ensure justice for all political parties amid political pressures.

This advice was given during a courtesy visit from INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) and his national commissioners at Abubakar's residence in Minna, Niger.

Abubakar pledged support for INEC ahead of the Osun governorship election and the 2027 general elections, stressing the need for free, fair, and credible elections. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the INEC Chairman, stating that the role is critical to Nigeria's democratic framework and that the commission must remain steadfast against distractions.

Abubakar also mentioned a strategic meeting of the National Peace Committee scheduled for July 29 in Abuja, leading to the signing of the Peace Accord on July 30 for the Osun election, which he described as a crucial test for the upcoming general elections.
