Over 3.3 million IDPs recorded in Nigeria in 2023
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released a demographic bulletin on Tuesday in Abuja, indicating that Nigeria recorded 3,381,228 internally displaced persons (IDPs) across 14 states in 2023. Borno state accounted for the largest share, with 1,711,481 individuals, representing 50.62% of the total IDPs.
Following Borno, Benue state had 394,567 IDPs (11.67%), and Katsina state recorded 244,380 IDPs (7.23%). In contrast, Nasarawa and Kano states had the lowest shares, with 52,383 (1.55%) and 20,580 (0.61%) IDPs, respectively.
The report also highlighted Nigeria's projected population for 2023 as 221,250,127, comprising 112,434,239 males and 108,815,888 females. Kano state was noted to have the highest population at 15,671,491, while Nasarawa and Bayelsa were identified as the least populated states, with populations of 2,948,849 and 2,583,352, respectively.
