Over 300,000 Displaced in Niger State Amid Insecurity

Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago reported that over 300,000 individuals are displaced across 10 local government areas in Niger State due to ongoing insecurity. Nigeria has the third highest number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Africa, with banditry contributing significantly to the crisis.

The number of IDPs has risen to an estimated two million, with women and children making up 80% of those affected. Conditions in IDP camps are dire, characterized by severe food shortages and inadequate sanitation, leading to increased health risks and a high rate of malnutrition.

Reports indicate that displaced individuals face abuse, and the government struggles to provide adequate resources for their care. Allegations of corruption have emerged, with relief materials intended for IDPs reportedly being misappropriated.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has called for urgent humanitarian intervention to address the needs of vulnerable populations, including food, water, sanitation, and health services.
