SEMA Reports 347 Displaced by Floods in Cross River

The Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) reported that 347 individuals were displaced due to mudslides and flash floods in August. This includes 167 people affected by a mudslide in Calabar and approximately 180 others displaced by heavy rainfall in the Central Senatorial District.
Mr Efa Nyong, the Director-General of SEMA, disclosed this information in Calabar while addressing the agency's response to recent disasters. He noted that the victims are currently being sheltered in various locations within Calabar and the Central Senatorial District.
Nyong attributed the rising incidence of disasters to both natural occurrences and human activities, particularly the indiscriminate dumping of refuse. He emphasized the importance of disaster prevention and preparedness, mentioning ongoing campaigns in various senatorial districts.
Nyong explained SEMA's disaster-response structure and highlighted the role of the Nigerian Red Cross Society in assisting displaced persons. The financial impact of the disasters remains undetermined due to currency volatility.
