NEMA Reports 245 Deaths and 215,000 Displaced by Floods

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that flooding across 28 states has resulted in 245 deaths and the displacement of 214,997 individuals. As of October 20, 2026, a total of 673,350 people have been affected across 134 Local Government Areas.
These figures were presented during the National Emergency Coordination Forum (NECF) held in Abuja, aimed at reviewing flood response operations and improving coordination among agencies. NEMA's director-general, Mrs Zubaida Umar, represented by Dr Godwin Topikor, stressed the need for stronger collaboration among institutions to address the needs of affected populations and prepare for the anticipated 2026/2027 El Niño phenomenon.
She highlighted the risks of displacement, poor sanitation, and limited access to essential services, urging for better information sharing and coordinated interventions. The forum also discussed operational gaps and priorities across critical sectors, including food security, healthcare, and emergency shelter.
