Cross River Launches Early Warning System for Disasters

The Cross River state government is implementing an early warning system to monitor landslides and floods, developed through a partnership between the Cross River Geographic Information Agency (CRGIA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and the Ministry of Environment. Mr. Jesam Iwara, the Director of Operations at CRGIA, announced that the system will utilize Geographic Information System (GIS) technology and strategically placed sensors to track soil moisture, underground earth movements, rainfall, and flood levels in vulnerable areas.

This initiative aims to provide timely data to prevent loss of lives, homes, and critical infrastructure. The system will help identify locations at risk of natural disasters, enabling preventive measures such as evacuations.

The government is currently analyzing rainfall patterns to predict disaster-prone areas and plans to deploy the system ahead of the next rainy season. Governor Bassey Otu's administration is also investing in CRGIA's digital infrastructure to support land administration and enhance disaster response capabilities.
