37 Feared Dead in Rivers Pipeline Incident on September 3

On September 3, 2026, an incident at Okari Jetty in the Okrika Mainland area of Rivers State has left no fewer than 37 people feared dead due to suspected inhalation of petroleum products. The Youth and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), led by Executive Director Dr Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, reported that the incident occurred around midnight while petroleum products, referred to as “Indorama fuel,” were being transferred from a pipeline into boats under high pressure.

Reports indicate that several individuals remain unaccounted for, with some bodies sighted floating in the river but not yet recovered. YEAC-Nigeria has called for an investigation by the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and urged pipeline operators to enhance security measures.

The organization also advised local residents to avoid unauthorized access to oil infrastructure due to the risks involved. As of the report's filing, there was no official confirmation of the death toll or the identities of the deceased.
