50 Malian Soldiers Killed in Jihadist Attack in Anefi

On a Saturday, at least 50 Malian soldiers were killed in an attack attributed to Tuareg separatist jihadists in the northern town of Anefi. The assault targeted an army convoy leaving Anefi and followed a week of fighting as the jihadists attempted to control the area.

The group, which has ties to Al-Qaeda and is known as JNIM, briefly captured the town and encircled a military base. Local officials reported that the attack was one of the deadliest suffered by the Malian army this year, with sources within the military stating that the soldiers were executed.

An investigation is underway to determine the tactical failures that led to the vulnerability of the soldiers. Russian paramilitary forces were reportedly en route to Gao at the time of the attack but did not suffer any losses.

The Malian military government, which has been in power since a coup in 2020, continues to struggle to restore security amid ongoing jihadist and separatist unrest.
