European Lawmakers Urge Nigeria to Protect Christians

On June 22, 2023, the European Parliament passed a resolution with overwhelming support from 501 lawmakers, condemning the increasing violence against Christians in Nigeria, particularly in the Middle Belt region. The resolution was prompted by a recent attack in Kawel Village, Plateau State, where 20 Christians, including a pastor, were reportedly killed during a night raid by armed assailants.

Lawmakers expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria, especially in Plateau State, where communities have faced repeated attacks. They called on the Nigerian government to intensify efforts against terrorist groups, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The resolution also demanded an independent investigation into the violent attacks and emphasized the need to end the culture of impunity. Slovak lawmaker Miriam Lexmann described the killings in Kawel as a tragic example of the violence affecting the Christian population in Nigeria, highlighting the urgent need for protective measures for vulnerable communities.
