Tinubu's Aide Defends President's UNGA Absence

Ademola Osodi, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Foreign Affairs and Protocol, addressed the President's absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, dismissing claims that it was linked to strained relations with the United States. Osodi referred to these claims as an "old chestnut," emphasizing that Tinubu has previously engaged with American institutions.

He recounted accompanying Tinubu during past visits to the UN and noted recent travels through Los Angeles to Japan. Osodi defended Tinubu's absence, stating that the President is prioritizing domestic issues, particularly the economy and security.

He asserted that Nigeria would still effectively represent its interests internationally, with Vice President Kashim Shettima leading the delegation and Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the UN, Jimoh Ibrahim, present. The comments come amid criticism of Tinubu's third consecutive absence from the UNGA, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar demanding an explanation for this decision.
