Anyim Defends Tinubu's Absence at UNGA, Cites Representation

Anyim Pius Anyim, former Senate President, addressed concerns regarding President Bola Tinubu's absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), asserting that the reported arrangement for Tinubu to sit beside U.S. President Donald Trump would not have made a substantial difference.

During an interview on Arise News, Anyim explained that the President's absence was not constitutionally mandated and that Vice President Kashim Shettima was representing Nigeria at the UNGA in New York. He emphasized that the core proceedings of the General Assembly mainly involve national statements and side meetings, which could be managed by the Vice President.

Anyim noted that unless Tinubu had scheduled critical bilateral or multilateral meetings requiring his presence, his absence should not be a significant issue. He argued that the seating arrangement with Trump should not be overemphasized, as it does not guarantee meaningful engagement.
