The situation has become increasingly dire, with landlords imposing rent increases of 60% to 80% without prior notice, leaving tenants in financial distress. Individuals like Tund Babalola, a 51-year-old private school teacher, describe rent as a lifelong burden, while single mother Fumilayo Bidemi highlights the mental health toll of these pressures.

The Lagos State Government has warned against exploitative practices, including demanding two years' rent upfront, but enforcement remains weak. Many residents are considering relocating to Ogun State, where rents are comparatively lower, as the financial strain continues to mount amid stagnant wages and rising living costs.
