NPF Reform Initiative to Restore Public Trust Announced

On October 23, 2023, Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu, the 23rd police chief, announced a comprehensive reform initiative within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) aimed at enforcing professionalism, discipline, and restoring public confidence. This initiative seeks to confront long-standing complaints regarding extortion, illegal checkpoints, and harassment of citizens.

Disu emphasized that the status quo cannot be maintained and warned that failure to enforce new standards would lead to strict consequences. The reform includes a commitment to immediate behavior changes across commands, with a focus on ensuring officers serve the public rather than intimidate them.

Disu highlighted unacceptable practices such as soliciting money from motorists and operating illegal checkpoints. He underscored the importance of discipline and adherence to uniform regulations, stating that misconduct will no longer be tolerated.
