Nigerian Report Reveals 11,866 Abandoned Federal Properties, Wasting Prime Assets

A 2021 Nigerian report by the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) identified approximately 11,866 abandoned federal properties, with 63% of federal buildings lying unused. The neglect of these properties, including iconic structures like the old National Assembly complex and former ministry buildings, has led to wasted assets and economic potential.

The issue has also impacted the availability of office spaces, particularly in Lagos, affecting the movement of the federal government's seat to Abuja. The abandoned properties have become havens for criminal activities like kidnapping and ritualistic practices.
