Senate Delays Decision on Abaribe's Defection Status

Enyinnaya Abaribe faces uncertainty regarding his Senate seat as the Senate delays action on his defection from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The Senate began routine announcements last week, leading to a major controversy over whether Abaribe retains his Abia South seat, as per Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates that lawmakers lose their seats upon defecting from their political party unless the party is divided.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Abaribe's defection letter during a plenary session, which prompted objections citing a lack of evidence of division within APGA. Abaribe claims he was expelled from APGA, but the letter confirming this has not been made public.

The Senate leadership has directed Victor Umeh to verify the situation within APGA, but no formal motion or investigation has been initiated. The matter remains unresolved, with APGA pressuring the Senate to declare Abaribe's seat vacant, potentially leading to legal action if the Senate does not act.
