APGA Demands Senate to Vacate Abaribe's Seat After Defection

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has formally requested that the Nigerian Senate declare the seat of Senator Abaribe, representing the Abia South Senatorial District, vacant. This request follows Abaribe's recent defection from APGA to the African Democratic Congress, which he announced during a Senate session.

APGA's position was communicated after a meeting of the party's national working committee held in Awka, Anambra State. The party's spokesman emphasized that Abaribe's defection contradicts the mandate given to him by voters on the platform of APGA.

They maintain that such defections should lead to the declaration of the seat as empty, in accordance with constitutional provisions. The party also acknowledged the Senate leadership's handling of the situation thus far and expressed support for actions that protect democratic order.

Furthermore, APGA warned its members to uphold party discipline, especially with the upcoming 2026 primary elections.
