Released NYSC Member Describes Captivity Experience

Morenikeji Akande, one of the released prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, recounted her experience in captivity as both physically and mentally exhausting. During a reunion with their families, she stated that the female victims were not chained or sexually harassed, unlike the male victims who faced restrictions.
The victims were abducted on Thursday, October 1, when gunmen attacked two 18-seater buses along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in Imo State. Adewole Bamidele, a staff member of the Ibadan NYSC office, explained that the victims were not originally deployed to Imo State but were traveling through it en route to their designated orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.
He mentioned that despite the severe psychological trauma, family members and socio-political groups demanded that the federal government and NYSC management revise deployment policies to prevent future risks. The freed members are currently recovering at home.
