NYSC Member Describes Captivity After Rescue Operation

On October 1, 20 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were abducted by gunmen while traveling in two buses along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in Imo State. The buses, which bore the Abia State Government logo, were intercepted by the attackers, who took the victims into a nearby forest.
Following the abduction, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of N1 billion, later reduced to N5 million per victim, totaling N100 million for all 20 corps members. The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, deployed Deputy Inspector-General of Police Shehu Nadada to coordinate the rescue operation.
On October 6, a joint security operation involving the Department of State Services (DSS), military, and police successfully rescued the corps members. During their reunion with families in Oyo State, Akande Morenikeji stated that while the experience was physically and mentally exhausting, the female victims were not sexually harassed during their seven days in captivity.
