Oyo NUT Strike Begins Over Teacher Abductions

The Oyo State wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) initiated an indefinite strike on June 1, 2023, following a series of kidnappings involving teachers and students in the Oriire Local Government Area. The strike was prompted by an attack on May 15, 2023, where armed men abducted individuals from three schools: Commun Grammar School, Ahoru, Esinel Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and Yawota near Ogbomoso.

Two people were killed during this incident. Compliance with the strike has been reported across public primary and secondary schools in Oyo State, including institutions such as Anglican Junior Secondary School and St.

Louis Grammar School. Teachers have been instructed not to report for duty, aligning with the union's directive.

However, students scheduled to take the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) are exempt from the strike, and teachers involved in the examination process are expected to fulfill their duties. Mr.

Yemisi Alao, a teacher, confirmed the compliance with the strike, emphasizing solidarity for the victims of the abductions.
