Abia State Launches Centralized Transport System in Umuahia

The Abia State Government, led by Governor Alex Otti, has commenced the enforcement of a newly introduced centralized transport system in Umuahia. This initiative involves relocating transport operators to a designated terminal, as disclosed by Okei Kanu during a press briefing following a State Executive Council meeting.

The enforcement began on Tuesday, with the first phase involving the Abia Green Shuttle buses. The government aims to address concerns raised by transport operators and ensure smooth transit.

Despite pushback from some operators who are resistant to change, Kanu emphasized the importance of this initiative for creating an organized and efficient transport system. Dr.

Chimezi Ukaegbu, the Commissioner for Transport, stated that the initiative is not intended to deprive anyone of their livelihood but to enhance the transport system's organization. The transport union has been asked to nominate representatives to work with the government to properly integrate the new system.

The initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion, eliminate indiscriminate loading points, and improve security within the transport sector.
